Golden Age in Venice

Here are a few images of the famous pala d'oro in the Basilica of Saint Mark in Venice, Italy. It is situated behind the main altar and is recognized as one of the most exquisite examples of Byzantine sacred art in the world. It was transported to Venice from Constantinople in the aftermath of the Fourth Crusade. I was able to see it once during a visit to La Serenissima.
