Romney's Cuts

From Fox News:
Democratic groups are pouncing on Mitt Romney for saying he would stop funding Planned Parenthood with dollars borrowed from China, accusing the Republican presidential front-runner of cutting preventive health care services to pay for millionaires' tax breaks.

Answering a question Tuesday about how he would cut the budget, Romney told a viewer of KSDK-TV in Kirkwood, Mo., that he would administer a test to see whether a program qualifies for federal funding.

"My test is pretty simple. Is the program so critical that it's worth borrowing money from China to pay for? And on that basis, of course you get rid of Obamacare. That's the easy one. But there are others. Planned Parenthood, we're going to get rid of that.

And predictably, this has sent the left into fits of apoplexy. Personally, I just like how that sounds... "we're going to get rid of that." Here's to brevity's punch.

  1. Full disclosure: I have not been looking forward to a Romney primary victory.

But I do like the sound of that.

  2. I see your point. There are a bunch of people I'd rather see carrying our torch (Paul Ryan stands out), but I suppose at this point in the game, I care less about who we pick than the higher objective of dislodging Obama from the White House. Anyone on our side would be infinitely better. But again, I sympathize with what you say.

  3. I hear a lot of conservative voters say that they are unhappy with Romney as the front-runner. I am genuinely curious about why that's the case. What is it that makes Romney less appealing to so many convicted Republicans? What are your thoughts, Niall?

James, would you say that conservatives' best bet at this point is to rally around Romney?

  4. I'd say that I share the concern about Romney and the earnest wish, in a perfect world, for someone else. With so many young conservative stars on the rise after 2010, this is an imperfect lot from which we have been asked to choose. I sense among a lot of conservatives a great distrust of Romney, which I honestly don't share, as if, once elected, he will "go liberal" on us. It is true that his instincts are not as conservative as say, a Reagan or a Buckley and, for that reason, he has a lot of trouble connecting with the base. But as a result of the primary fight with Santorum and Gingrich, and the tea party, Romney's been so aggressively boxed in to take up the conservative side that he simply cannot renege if elected.

  5. What James said. I don't really trust him.

"Romney's been so aggressively boxed in to take up the conservative side that he simply cannot renege if elected."

    This is my hope.
