The Immigration Debate: Rhetoric vs Reality

This is a short, six-minute explanation of the "amnesty for illegals bill" currently being debated in Congress.

  1. Supporters of the bill claim that its passage would allow the illegals to finally "come out of the shadows". It's a particularly popular and emotionally loaded phrase that amnesty advocates like Kennedy and Bush are fond of employing. George Will has a salient article entitled, "Out of What 'Shadows'?" that totally eviscerates the "shadows" metaphor. The example he cites is sobering.

    Here's an excerpt:

"Affirming the rule of law is, however, where to begin because when a large and somewhat cohesive cohort succeeds in living in defiance of the law, the scofflaw spirit can have myriad manifestations." Writing in last summer's City Journal, Heather Mac Donald of the Manhattan Institute gave a sobering example:

"Protecting one form of lawbreaking may require protecting others as well. The city of Maywood in Los Angeles County declared itself a sanctuary zone for illegal aliens this year. Then it got rid of its drunk-driving checkpoints, because they were nabbing too many illegal aliens. Next, this 96 percent Latino city, almost half of whose adult population lacks a ninth-grade education, disbanded its police traffic division entirely, so that illegals wouldn't need to worry about having their cars towed for being unlicensed.

so what are we supposed to do? these people are coming here for a better life, that is the american way and they should have a right to it just like my ancestors and probably yours. Maybe this bill is off, I don't really know, but it is at least an effort to do something! The GOP just wants to kick everyone out and build a wall, imagine if your family was affected Mr. Meese what would you and the other fat cats say then.

  3. There is an observable distinction between legal immigration and illegal immigration. Those opposed to the current bill have stressed this point.
